Francisco Franco came to power by leading a military coup against a democratic government of the Spanish Republic in 1936. A civil war happened. Because he did not get any help from other democratic governments, Franco got some help from Soviet Russia and also from a large number of foreign volunteers. Franco's Nationalists got a lot more military assistance from Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy. After a while Franco's crew won the civil war and Franco became the new head of state and dictator. Hitler helped him rise to power; he probably could not have done it on his own and Hitler was probably his biggest influence when rising to power. Here is a famous Franco quote : "All is well, thank God... but victory will not be complete, definitive or stable, as long as Masonry is in our Spain. And how will it disappear? What to do? Ask Mussolini." This quote is showing the influence of the Italian dictator Mussolini on Franco.
